In My Dream

Concept: Deborah Hazler
choreography and Performance: Deborah Hazler, Nora Stephens
Duration: 10 minutes
Music: Patricia Dallio, Nina Simone
Premiere: Im_flieger, WUK, Vienna, January 31, 2007

In My Dream is a very intimate duet that demonstrates the struggle of being a woman, of being the object of affection, of being the object.
Going in and out of abstraction the two performers shift from being women to beings with out specific gender. In emphasizing the female body and its role as a sexual object this work tries to criticize the superficiality that gender-roles produce.

I admit I am still no different; I constantly look at my body and wish I could change my breasts, be thinner and more beautiful. I know from experience that any changes will not make me a happier person or any more valued as a human being. I do not talk about these things very often; they upset me.

These issues shape many women. Women (and men) are determined by these outside superficial factors. In My Dream tries to work through these notions by presenting different forms of the female (the choreographer’s) consciousness.
